Apple MacBook Pro 2017 : A Laptop for Professionals but not for Gamers

The 2017 lineup of Apple MacBook Pro’s was launched at WWDC and everyone was super excited but for me, this excitement soon faded away after checking the specifications out. Yeah, I know, bummer, right? As shown in Figure 1 given below, there are no physical changes in the new lineup but the internal hardware has been beefed up a bit. Anyway, let’s check the new specifications out.

MacBook Pro lineup.jpg

Figure 1 : Lineup of 2016/2017 Apple MacBook Pro’s [1]

Processor

The new MacBook Pro’s come with the 7th Generation Intel Kaby Lake Processors, which are said to have a boost in performance with greater clock speeds when compared to the previous generation (Skylake processors). The in-built GPU can handle encoding and decoding of HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) format, which means that 4K videos will be handled effortlessly.

7th-generaion-of-intel-core-processors

Figure 2 : 7th Generation of Intel Core Processors [2]

RAM

The RAM has not changed from the 2016 models even though a lot of people (including myself) thought that there would be a model with 32 GB of RAM for 2017. The 2017 models have LPDDR3 RAM with capacities of 8 GB and 16 GB with clock speeds of 2133 MHz. Even though the laptops manufactured by Apple’s competitors use DDR4 RAM, Apple had decided to stick to LPDDR3 due to low power consumption. Meh, you get 16 GB of RAM : That’s good enough for me.

Storage

The base model (13 inch) contains 128 GB of flash memory while this can be configured to 512 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB. I do not think that 128 GB of flash memory is enough for all files these days as there are now 4K video, which require a lot of space to be stored in the hard disk. One can argue that portable hard disk drives and cloud storage are now available for cheaper prices but what is the point of paying a huge sum of money only for a laptop with 128 GB !

Graphics

Alright. Here comes the moment that the gamers have been waiting for : Graphics. All MacBook Pro’s are equipped with Intel Iris Plus 600 series graphics. The 15 inch models consist of AMD Radeon Pro 555 and 560 graphics chips which have GDDR5 memories of 2 GB and 4 GB, respectively. These chips are good for gaming in 2012 but in 2017, people prefer getting higher frame rates to obtain a more realistic effect. They could have at least incorporated AMD Radeon 570 or 580 chips, which have greater capacities of video memory and higher memory bandwidths.

This is what I feel about the new MacBook Pro lineup. Feel free to comment on your views of the 2017 lineup.

A Week with Windows 10 on a MacBook Pro

Since 29th of July, I had been checking for the Windows update to download Windows 10 to my laptop and a week ago, I was finally able to receive it. The update process took about 45 minutes and it was worth the wait. I would like to share my experience of the latest operating system by Microsoft.

Figure 1 : Windows 10 on a MacBook Pro

Figure 1 : Windows 10 on a MacBook Pro

Looks good, right? I love the all new dark theme as it matches well with my wallpaper. The Start menu is back. Yay !! Alright, let me walk you through the update process. if you have been using Windows 8.1 via BootCamp in your Mac and have registered your free upgrade, just search for new updates on Windows Update. You don’t have to fear of losing data on either partition as I did not lose any of mine but it would be better to back up at least the important files before you start the upgrade process. Once the update is ready, start the download and the update process will start automatically. Remember that your laptop will restart for a few times, so every time it restarts, remember to press the alt (Option) key on the keyboard and select “Windows”. Once Windows 10 has been installed in your Mac and if you have the latest drivers for BootCamp , simply reinstall them because I think they get erased during the update process. If not, download the latest drivers from BootCamp utility in Mac OS X. As you can see in Figure 1 given above, most of your applications that ran on Windows 8.1 will be compatible with Windows 10 (for example, Call of Duty : Modern Warfare 3 in my case). You might realise that a lot of disk space has been used up by the system when the new OS has been installed, so perform a disk clean-up according to the procedure given below :

  1. Click on Start icon on the taskbar and type “Disk” and Disk Clean-up should appear. Click on that.
  2. After the process of scanning files, click the “Clean up system files” button to switch the Disk Cleanup tool to extended mode.
  3. Find and check the “Previous Windows installation(s)” item. If you need more space, check on items which state “Temporary…”
  4. Click OK.

Since I only use Windows for games, I’m not going to explain about the personal assistant “Cortana”, so apologies in advance. Now let’s look at the new web browser in this operating system.

Figure 2 : Microsoft Edge

Figure 2 : Microsoft Edge

The new browser is called “Microsoft Edge” and is shown in Figure 2. It is quite fast and does not crash as its predecessor, Internet Explorer. However, the disadvantage is that add-ons and extensions such as Adblock Plus are still not compatible with Edge. However, Internet Explorer can still be used if this is an issue by simply clicking on the three dots at the top right corner and then selecting “Open with Internet Explorer”. Alternatively follow the procedure given below:

  1. Click on Start icon on the taskbar and select “All Apps”.
  2. Select “Windows Accessories”.
  3. Select “Internet Explorer”.
Internet Explorer on Start Menu

You can also click on Start icon and then type “Internet Explorer” and click on it.

I hope this post was helpful and enjoy Windows 10 on your computer (Mac or PC).

Sony MDR-XB950AP : When extra bass becomes too much bass

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to try a pair of MDR-XB950AP headphones by Sony and thought of sharing my experience with my fellow readers.

Design

Figure : Sony MDR-XB950AP headphones

Figure : Sony MDR-XB950AP headphones [1]

The MDR-XB950AP is a pair of over-ear (circumaural) headphones, which belongs to the extra bass family. The headband has been manufactured using metal, which gives a premium look but has cushion, so that a comfortable fit is achieved. The ear-cups have a swivel folding design, so that the headphones become quite portable during travelling. The driver size is 40 mm, so you will not feel as if two big cans are fitted to your ears (like the XB500 or XB700).

Sound Quality

These headphones have a frequency response of 3 Hz to 28 kHz, which makes them ideal for dance and hip-hop tracks but I felt that the bass has been overpowered (as in Beats Mixr) and the equaliser setting in my phone was set to Normal. The vocals were clear but the mid-frequencies were a bit muddy. I think the XB500’s have better sound quality when compared with XB950’s.

Price

MDR-XB950AP headphones cost around £84.00, so they are affordable when compared to headphones manufactured by Beats by Dre but I think these should actually cost around £60.00.

Beats Studio 2.0 : Ideal Pair of Headphones for the Sporty

A few months ago, I had the opportunity to check out the new Beats Studio, known as Beats Studio 2.0, at the Apple Store and would like to share my experience with my fellow readers.

Figure 1 : Beats Studio headphones and accessories

Figure 1 : Beats Studio headphones and accessories [1]

Beats Studio features active noise cancellation which can be activated by pressing on the small button found on the right ear-cup (However, I was not able to experience this at the store maybe because the battery charge was low). This battery lasts for about 20 hours and can be recharged using the USB cable shown in Figure 1. There is a battery level indicator consisting of five LED’s under the noise cancellation activation button as shown in Figure 2. Active noise cancelling feature can be very handy when taking public transport.

Figure 2 ; Beats Studio Wireless with the battery level indicator [2]

Figure 2 : Beats Studio Wireless with the battery level indicator [2]

Design

As shown in the figure above, the headphones have a plastic exterior. However, there is a variation with the metallic exterior (titanium) as well for the premium look as shown in the figure given below.

Figure 2 : Beats Studio 2.0 with metallic exterior [2]

Figure 3 : Beats Studio 2.0 with metallic exterior [3]

These headphones are circumaural (over ear).  The ear-cups can be folded, making the headset more portable while traveling. The inner layer of the headband is made of rubber, so that the headphones will not slide if the user is running on a treadmill, for example. The ear-cups are more comfortable than those found in the Beats Mixr.

Sound Quality

The bass produced by the Studio 2.0 is punchy but not muddy as that produced in Mixr. The vocals are clear enough. I listened to some electronic and hip-hop tracks and they sounded amazing. If you’re an audiophile, you might find that the upper mid frequencies sound a bit harsh.

Price

The retail price of the Beats Studio 2.0 is £269.95 while Beats Studio 2.0 wireless costs £329.95. As every Beats product, these headphones have high price tags. These headphones should actually cost in the £100.00 – £150.00 range, considering the advanced digital signal processing (DSP) techniques involved, even though the materials used for manufacture is cheap.

Discover the Next Galaxy

Today I had the opportunity to get a hands on experience with the latest Galaxy devices of the Samsung flagship, namely Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge and thought of sharing my experience with my readers. Design

Figure 1 : Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge

Figure 1 : Samsung Galaxy S6 (left) and S6 Edge (right) [1]

The Galaxy S6 has a sleek design, which cannot be found any previous models. The four corners of the phone are curved (Figure 1). The front and rear consists of glass (Corning Gorilla Glass 4) while the rest of the body is made out of metal in both models, which give a premium feel.

Figure 2 : Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge [2]

Figure 2 : Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge [2]

As shown in Figure 2, the 3.5 mm headphone and charging ports can be found at the bottom of the phone. The grill at the bottom-right is the speaker, which could produce good (but not great) bass. Both S6 and S6 Edge have 5.1″ QHD AMOLED displays with a resolution of 1440 x 2560. Micro-SIMs cannot be used with these models as they use nano-SIMs. Performance Both Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge have Samsung Exynos 7420 Octa-core processors (Quad-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53 & Quad-core 2.1 GHz Cortex-A57) and 3 GB of RAM under the hood, which take multitasking to a whole new level [3].

Samsung Exynos 7 Octa processor

Figure 3 : Samsung Exynos 7 Octa Processor [4]

I checked the RAM usage via Applications Manager and found out that the system uses 1 GB of RAM. I am not quite sure whether the phone might run slow after a lot of apps and widgets have been installed though as the retail devices run quite smoothly without any lag. The software which runs in both models is Android 5.0.2 (Lollipop). The Li-Ion battery in S6 and S6 Edge is non-removable and has capacities of 2550 mAh and 2600 mAh, respectively.

Figure 4 : Samsung Galaxy S6 camera [5]

Figure 4 : Samsung Galaxy S6  rear camera [5]

The rear camera on both S6 and S6 Edge is 16 MP and has optical image stabilisation while the front camera is 5 MP, ideal for taking selfies. The camera application has a shortcut too; just press the Home button twice. The only negativity i found in the camera is the design : The camera protrudes from the back, making it difficult to keep the phone flat on a surface. However, this problem could be solved by using a case.

The least amount of storage in both of these devices is 32 GB, which is quite large (although approximately 15.3 GB of this will be used by the system). This is the reason for the elimination of the micro SD card slot. I do not know why fans keep on complaining about this though.

Another cool feature that I found in both devices is wireless charging. You don’t have to carry the charging cables and adapters always as wireless charging stations are going to be equipped at places such as restaurants.

Here’s what I feel about the latest flagship devices by Samsung. To be honest, the Galaxy S6 looks like an iPhone 6 by Apple. Don’t just take my word for it, give them a try. Also take care when handling these devices as they are not waterproof !

A Phone with a Curved Edge Screen

Last week, I checked out the phone which Samsung is boasting about which is equipped with a curved display, named “Galaxy Note Edge”, and thought of sharing my views on the flagship device.

Samsung Galaxy Note Edge

Figure : Samsung Galaxy Note Edge [1]

Design

Note Edge consists of a 5.6″ Quad HD+ Super AMOLED screen with a resolution of 1600 x 2560 pixels and the edge of the screen is curved. This feature helps the user to view notifications without interruption and he/she will not miss them, even if the cover of the phone is closed.

Specifications The year 2014 became a year with selfies. The camera in Note Edge is ideal for these (even wide ones) as it has a front camera with a resolution of 3.7 MP and a rear camera with a resolution of 16 MP.

Figure 2 : Rear camera of the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge

Figure 2 : Rear camera of the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge [2]

To improve security, the software has a fingerprint scanner, so it is not necessary to remember the passcode to unlock the phone.

Figure 2 : Block diagram of the Snapdragon 805 processor

Figure 3 : Block diagram of the Snapdragon 805 processor [3]

Multitasking has just got better with the 2.7 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Krait 450 processor and 3 GB RAM. There is so much space for music and pictures as the phone consists of 32 GB of internal memory. Android 4.4 (KitKat) is the operating system of the phone but I think it would be possible to upgrade it to 5.0 (Lollipop). The phone is not that heavy and according to the official specifications, it only weighs 174g [4]. This incredible device has been powered by a 3000mAh battery which could be charged from 0 to 50% in about half an hour !

In conclusion, I would give this phone 8/10 overall. At first, I thought that the edge screen was pointless but then it does have a purpose.

Sennheiser Urbanite : A Competitor for Beats

If you’re searching for a set of headphones that are ideal for hip-hop and dance tracks, there is a new player in town : Sennheiser joins the trend with Urbanite. I tried these today at Curry’s and thought of sharing my views.

Figure : Sennheiser Urbanite headphones

Figure : Sennheiser Urbanite headphones [1]

Design

The headband in Urbanite is made of comfortable but durable material, unlike Beats headphones, which have plastic headbands in most of their models. This pair of headphones can be considered as on-ear (Supra-aural) and a felt a bit painful after wearing it for a few minutes. The ear-cups can be folded, so it is quite portable.

Sound Quality

I tried listening to some hip-hop tracks and I was quite impressed with the bass these headphones can produce. The vocals were not muddy. Urbanite sounds better than Beats Solo2 but not as good as Beats Studio.

Price

Urbanite costs around £150.00, which is a bit expensive but not as expensive as Beats headphones.

I would definitely recommend this pair of headphones if you like urban genres of music such as hip-hop and progressive house.

Beats Mixr : “I’m all about that bass”

Christmas is almost here and you might be wondering what to shop for, so today I thought of sharing my views on the Beats Mixr headphones. This review might come handy if you are an audiophile.

FIgure : Beats Mixr [1]

Figure : Beats Mixr [1]

Design

Beats Mixr is a pair of on-ear headphones. By looking closely on one ear cup, you will notice that it is circular and hence does not fit inside your ear. I got a pain in my ear after wearing these headphones for about a minute. I have no idea how David Guetta manages to wear these during gigs for hours ! Good news is that the Mixr headset is not heavy.

Sound Quality

You read the title right. The bass produced in this headset is too punchy. I listened to a few songs (mainly of dance, electronic and hip-hop genres) with the equaliser in my music player set to Normal. The vocals and high frequencies were not clear enough. I would recommend not to change the equaliser settings as the vocals become muddy.

Price

For this level of sound quality and design, I think the Beats Mixr headset is overpriced. These should cost no more than 50 quid.

In conclusion, the Beats Mixr should need a remake, both in design and sound quality (sorry Doc). Hopefully, Apple will come up something new in the coming years.

Beats Pro : The name says it all

Last Friday was Black Friday, which means Christmas shopping kick-started officially. I went to Apple Store to check out some headphones and the Beats Pro was eye-candy. I tested it on a few songs and thought of sharing my view on this headset before you buy it or thought of giving it to a loved one as a Christmas present.

Figure : Beats Pro [1]

Figure : Beats Pro [1]

You must have noticed the title stating “The name says it all” and I really meant it. Beats Pro are catered for people “who take sound seriously” [2], in other words “for professionals”. If you’re just a school kid who has no idea of what sound really is, these are not for you, bro. Let me get to the serious stuff now.

Design

Even though these are circumaural (over-ear) headphones, the ear cups are circular, making it difficult for the entire ears to fit into them. Noise cancelling has been achieved by using these ear cups without the necessity for batteries. The structure is quite rigid and metallic, so no cheap plastic is involved, which means that the headset is a bit heavy but seems to last for a longer time than Beats Solo2. The headband is well-padded.

Sound quality

Beats Pro have a good balance in all frequencies : The bass is not very punchy but still powerful which makes vocals less muddled, so you can enjoy music with various genres. Good job, Doc !

Price

This pair of headphones costs around £350.00. Now that’s quite expensive, don’t you think? However, I have seen people wearing these on the bus, so I thought that they must be rich blokes. Oh well…

Bottom line is that if you’re a die-hard Beats fan, who needs to listen to music in great detail and who has a lot of money (or willing to sacrifice your bread and butter), these headphones won’t disappoint you.

iPhone Joins the “Phablet” Club

19th of September was a big day for Apple fans as the iPhone 6 was launched worldwide for the public. I too had the opportunity to experience the flagship device and thought of sharing my thoughts with my readers.

Figure 1 : iPhone 6 (Left) and iPhone 6 Plus (Right)

Figure 1 : iPhone 6 (Left) and iPhone 6 Plus (Right)

The first thing I love about this phone is the change in design. Since iPhone 4, Apple had been designing phones which are physically very similar but iPhone 6 has a more curved and sleek design, similar to the Samsung Galaxy devices. Secondly, I must say “Apple, welcome to the family of phablets !”. The iPhone 6  has a 4.7″ screen and the 6 Plus has a massive screen of 5.5″. That’s huge !! I personally did not find it difficult to handle an iPhone 6 Plus using one hand but if a particular user is having trouble, the phone has a feature called “Reachability”, which can be activated by tapping the Home button twice. The contents displayed on the screen get shifted down close to one’s thumb.

Figure 2 : iPhone 6 Plus reachability feature

Figure 2 : iPhone 6 Plus reachability feature [2]

If you do not prefer viewing content on the 6 Plus in portrait, landscape viewing is available. Simply tilt the phone 90 degrees anti-clockwise.

Figure 3 : iPhone 6 Plus Landscape Mode

Figure 3 : iPhone 6 Plus Landscape Mode [3]

Including the retina display found in Macbook Pro’s is also a plus sign for Apple, giving users the option to view movies in high resolution. The phone is pre-loaded with iOS8 with incredible new features such as Quicktype, Health and Continuity. (Please check the official website of Apple iOS 8 for more details). I also checked the technical specifications of both models using the website given in the references below [4] [5]. Both models have a dual-core processor (A8 and M8) and 1 GB of RAM. “Bummer, isn’t it?” I was expecting at least a quad-core processor with 2 GB of RAM. “Oh well…Apple……”. The iPhone 6 has a more advanced iSight rear camera with 8MP of resolution. Again, I was expecting a 13MP rear camera because most of the phones of Apple’s competitors, such as Samsung and HTC, are now equipped with a 13 MP rear camera. Maybe they’re leaving these hardware changes for iPhone 6S? Fingers-crossed. The hexa-core graphics processor is a plus for playing games. Sometimes, the numbers in the specifications can turn you down, so I checked some benchmark results on the performance and I was shocked by the result. Even though iPhone 6 has a dual-core processor, the benchmark score exceeds that of Samsung Galaxy S5, which has a quad-core processor ! The video given below shows this:

A final piece of advice : If you have a Mac, it’s better to go for an iPhone rather than an Android phone since syncing your phone with iTunes is very, very easy. Trust me on this. Plus, because of the lightning cable, you do not have to check the side of the connector when you try to connect your iPhone for syncing or charging. One more thing, please don’t drop your iPhone 6, if you buy one.
